Nationwide Standardized Amateur Radio Prepper Frequencies

Posted on 08 November 2011 by Joshua

Catastrophe Network and The American Preparedness Radio Network (TAPRN) have teamed up to create a Standardized Amateur Radio Prepper Communications Plan. This plan outlines a standard set of frequencies that should be used by all preppers following a catastrophic disaster. These frequencies will serve as a meeting point where information about the event can be shared and actions between like minded preppers can be communicated.

This plan will not and cannot work if it is not widely publicized in the prepper community! All preppers must know and understand these frequencies in order for them to become common meeting points. This is your call to action, if you are a licensed Amateur Radio operator and a prepper, please spread the word about this new communications plan. Tweet about it, blog about it, and most of all…share the document!

The following are the frequencies that have been designated by Catastrophe Network and the The American Preparedness Radio Network (TAPRN):

  • 80 Meters – 3.818 MHz LSB (TAPRN Net: Sundays at 9 PM ET)
  • 40 Meters – 7.242 MHz LSB
  • 40 Meters Digital – 7.073 MHz USB PSK-31 (TAPRN Net: Sundays at 7:30 PM ET)
  • 20 Meters – 14.242 MHz USB
  • 2 Meters – 146.420 MHz FM

Aside from the TAPRN nets held on 3.818 and their digital net on 7.073, formal prepper nets will not be held on these frequencies. However, future exercises and drills may be held on-air between preppers and preppers are encouraged to use these frequencies to coordinate activities. Along the same lines, during catastrophes, it is unlikely that a formal net control will be established. The Standardized Amateur Radio Prepper Communications Planoutlines protocols for calling and communicating with other preppers.

Can’t figure out what they plan to discuss when the SHTF. How big/small their radios are, and the lengths of their antennas, just like today most likely.

If other communication is up during a disaster, there’s better ways to send/receive information than simplex radio. If other comms are down, then there’s still better info available on different freqs.

If these amateurs ever did have some seemingly valuable info to offer, you’d never know if it was truthful or if they were lying, or even if you kenw them, then coerced maybe.

And even if it was valuable info and could somehow be proved truthful, is it close enough to my location to even matter?

Sorry, if you need to be able to communicate with someone in a disaster, then agree on the details beforehand. This Standardize Prepper Freq is just an attempt by some hams to try to find a SHTF use for their hobby. Notice how the unwashed masses (ie, those without an amatuer license) are not welcome? As if in the middle of a SHTF event, they’re still expecting everyone to abide by FCC part 97. Right.

Not to trash any involved in community preparedness activities like RACES or ARES, those have a legitimate use.

If you do not want to communicate before, during or after an event, as we were doing post Hurricane Irene and other events, naturally, nobody will force you.
However, when infrastructure is down, of significant size, then it’s great to be able to reach friends an family outside of the effected region, use the various e-mail over radios, or the old fashioned one way message to friends or family via stations closer to them and/or outside of the effected area to let them know that you are all right (or not) is very valuable. I’ve handled those messages both ways.

Now – if you believe that the entire planet is going to be fragged, then radio, food, water weapons and all that falls into the doomsday whine of ‘The living will envy the dead, so I’d rather do nothing and die.”

Not for me and mine – as long as I have a pulse there is ‘pontential’ ;^) If you want to get involved, please do. If you do not, please don’t. It IS afterall, what is left of a free country.

Even better – let us know what ideas YOU have to do things better. Then, make it happen personally. That is really all that counts – think then do.

Remember though – communication needs vary greatly depending upon the situation. Read that TAPRN article about ‘Communication Layers’ for a little insight as to many of us see it for some fuel for though, depate and improvement.

C’mon By and visit. We don’t know ya’ll enough to bite :^)

“Those wno CAN: DO!” and frankly, they are the ones who matter in this world. Be one of ‘Them’.
